The Beginnings of YouTube

On April 23, 2005, Jawed posted the first video, which was less than 18 seconds long, titled “Me at the zoo.” Not exactly romantic. What happened next? Unsurprisingly, the video was a flop. However, they quickly realized that uploading amateur videos to the internet could actually be quite successful.

They decided to abandon the dating aspect of the site and instead allowed users to upload any kind of home video. Little did they know what this platform would become. Initially, they envisioned it as merely a place to host private videos that could be shared with close acquaintances.

YouTube soon became one of the fastest-growing sites on the internet, catching the attention of Google, which was using Google Videos at the time. Consequently, just one year after its creation, the site was sold to Google for $1.65 billion (equivalent to R$ 3.55 billion at the time).

YouTube’s Growth

Before 2005, if a computer user wanted to upload a video online, they had very few simple methods to do so. This is why YouTube quickly gained popularity. By 2007, during the U.S. presidential debates, CNN used questions that were posted and crafted by voters through the video platform.
